InvestEAP in Collaboration with the Burlington Community Health Center and Northern Counties Health Care:
Vermont has eight Federally Qualified Health Centers (FHQCs), located in communities throughout the state. The Resilient Vermont project evaluates whether providing Employee Assistance Program (EAP) prevention and early intervention services to FHQC patients can mitigate life stressors that would otherwise lead to chronic disease. With the dual goal of improving health outcomes and reducing health care expenditures in mind, the project seeks to demonstrate the effectiveness of conducting systematic behavioral health screening and providing short-term evidence-based treatment for identified problems. Success stories so far include a patient with liver disease who is now three months sober, a depressed patient to joined a weight-loss group and began attending workshops and activities at a local community center, and a young adult thrown out of her family home after filing a DCF report about her mother’s mistreatment of her younger brother, who—with help from the project—finished high school and obtained a job.
InvestEAP with King Arthur Flour:
This project evaluates the usefulness of screening and evidence based, short-term treatment for improving the behavioral health of employees at a private workplace. The project screens employees for poor nutrition, lack of exercise, depression, substance misuse, and smoking. For those employees to screen positive, the project provides short-term, evidence-based treatment to improve their overall health and wellbeing and thus reduce future health care expenditures. Numerous employees have responded to outreach efforts, and have undergone screening and intervention services. Most of them are looking to improve their diet and/or increase their levels of exercise. Clinical staff are continually trained in evidence-based treatment protocols to support employees in their efforts to achieve better health.
